Just across the Pitt River from the Tri-Cities area you’ll find Maple Ridge, another relatively new community filled with recreational activities for all. Less developed than other areas near the city of Vancouver, Maple Ridge still has wide open areas just perfect for a variety of sporting activities. With all the newly constructed facilities, you'll be certain to quench all your sporting thirsts.
For serious hikers, the Golden Ears Provincial Park offers an easy-to-hike east-side trail as well as a more difficult frontal assault. Once at the top you’ll marvel at views of surrounding lakes and mountains not possible from lower elevations. Also from the top you can wave to me waiting in the lodge at the base. Other hikes in the Chilliwack, Fraser Valley and Vancouver areas can be found here.
Horseback riding for experienced riders as well as novices can also be taken in at Golden Ears. Day rides from the Maple Meadows Equestrian Centre to nearby Alouette Lake offer a combined riding/swimming experience you’ll treasure for years. There's something special about being out in the woods: just you, the lake and your horse, eh cowboy?
There are also facilities at the park for beginners and advanced curlers. You'll find exact locations as well as other curling facilities at the Golden Ears Winter Club Web site.
At the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre you’ll find a 6-lane, 25-metre competition pool, a 4-lane, 25-metre teach pool, a leisure pool, tot pool, heated swirl pool and waterslides too. Furthermore you can indulge your desire for lifting weights in the newly outfitted weight room, or play a round of squash or racquetball on several of their regulation-sized courts.
Golf is a favourite pastime of West Coasters, and six scenic courses offer year-round enjoyment. The Golden Eagle Golf Club, Hacker’s Heaven, the Maple Ridge Golf Course, the Meadow Gardens Golf Club, the nearby Pitt Meadows Golf Club and the Swan-E-Set Resort and Country Club all offer first-class fairways and challenging courses for beginners and more advanced golf enthusiasts. Schedules and public tee-times are listed at the Maple Ridge community Web site.
At the Maple Ridge Lawn Bowling Club they welcome all neophyte lawn bowlers and will happily arrange lessons, lend you the necessary equipment and even find you players to compete against.
